BKN Open Call
PROGRAM
Björkö Konstnod (BKN) is located in two former school buildings in the northern Stockholm Archipelago, where the forest meets the sea. The residency is rooted in a collective ethos that embraces the idea of thinking together, learning together.
The smaller school building provides accommodation for residents, while the larger building serves as a space for both individual and collaborative work. It houses a shared kitchen and living room, where communal dinners and group activities take place, as well as a library, a shower room, and four toilets.
We welcome artists, researchers, writers, and curators working within the field of contemporary art. The residency offers four studios, two large and two small, suitable for a wide range of practices, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation. Facilities also include a wood and crafts workshop, spaces for working with natural and organic materials, and resources for sound and video production. Residents may borrow a portable camera, green screen, projector, and audio recording equipment.
In addition, BKN features an analogue darkroom and a dedicated sewing and weaving area equipped with a sewing machine and a traditional wooden loom.
We are happy to support applicants in their efforts to secure funding by providing letters of invitation.
Fees
1 week accommodation + studio: 2,000 SEK
Application
Your application should include the following:
- A one-page description of yourself and your proposed residency project (PDF), including:
- Your preferred residency period
- An explanation of how you plan to finance your stay
- Five images of relevant work (PDF)
- Your CV (PDF)
(You may create your application in PowerPoint and export it as a single PDF file.)

How to Apply for Funding for Your Residency Project
BKN encourages artists to apply for mobility grants and project funding. Financial support is often available through national arts organisations, regional or municipal authorities, and private foundations.
To assist applicants, BKN provides the following (non-exhaustive) list of potential funding sources:
- For artists from the Nordic and Baltic countries: Nordic Culture Point
- For artists from European countries: Culture Moves Europe
- For artists based in Sweden: The Swedish Arts Council (Kulturrådet) and the Swedish Arts Grants Committee (Konstnärsnämnden)
- For artists from all countries: On the Move – Funding
Other Residency Opportunities
BKN Studios for Local Artists
Local artists may use the studios during working hours (10:00-20:00) by arrangement.
Studio fee:
- 150 SEK per day
- 1,000 SEK per week
BKN Art Camping
We also offer the possibility of camping in the forest near the residency. Campers have access to an outdoor grill, shared kitchen, art lounge, shower, toilets, and a small studio workspace.
The weekly fee for a campsite for up to three people, including access to the small studio, is 1,200 SEK per week.
The fee may vary depending on which facilities the artist wishes to use.
