Paula Elion, Sweden

In these works, Paula Elion treats family photographs as living material. An old image of her parents and brothers is enlarged together with letters from home, turning private memory into something shared and uncertain. In the smaller works, drawings on second-hand glass frames bring different people and moments into the same space. Together, the works ask how memory changes, and how a family story can begin to look like someone else’s.

Paula Elion (La Plata, Argentina, 1973) is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Stockholm, Sweden. Her work explores memory, identity, gender, and migration through personal and cultural narratives, while also engaging broader social and political questions around family dynamics, the role of women in patriarchal societies, and the ways gender is constructed and perceived. Gender, in particular, has become a deeply personal line of inquiry, shaped by both her artistic practice and her experience of motherhood. Working with canvas, textiles, and found objects, she creates pieces that invite viewers to connect with overlapping narratives and complex emotional experiences.

A member of the artist collective Detroit Stockholm, Elion has exhibited internationally, including in Sweden, Germany, Israel, Argentina, Mexico, Serbia, Finland, and the United States. Her practice has been supported by several grants and includes participation in international artist residencies, where she has deepened her exploration of materials, memory, and identity. Grounded in experimentation, her approach treats the studio as a laboratory.
