He investigates the ways that these topics overlap for us as we navigate, with limited success, complex political crises through clumsy interfaces, problematic devices, and faulty systems. These investigations arrive for the viewer in the form of inherently interdisciplinary artworks and curatorial experiments, which provoke questions about how we work toward a more desirable collective future, among the machines, atop a planet in crisis.

First presented at the LeDocEnScene festival in Montreuil, France, on March 23, 2024.

Since the beginning of the war, I have been consuming the news like a mute witness to the catastrophe, functioning like a retina. My day begins with the ticker of a well-known news source, with a black bar and red and yellow reflections. My day ends by watching this ticker.

If art is capable of creating modalities aimed at cognitive justice, I do not have the possibility of finding such a modality and the capacity to be a citizen. That is why I am taking the first step, by fixing the witness’s position in its maximal consumption. I chose painting as an attempt to slow down, to try to find another space-time for the news. Of course, this attempt was doomed to failure. Even the speed of the canvas’s creation reached indecent values, and for contemporary painting, you can still see wet spots here. I am finishing this text after the opening of the exhibition and I must admit to being astonished by the unusual speed of thought and the images and names that come back to my memory in an attempt to understand my experience.

One of these memories was the name of the exhibition in Paris URGENT PAINTING in 2002, in a new attempt to bring painting back to the news agenda. It was around that time that I began my path in painting and I have never been able to choose anything else, just as I cannot choose other news. Despite the absurdity of reflection through matter and form, I continue compulsively to choose color.

Mikhail Sedov is a visual artist from Moscow, currently living and working in Paris. With a background in sociology and political science, his work reflects a blend of intellectual exploration and artistic expression. Since 2007, he has also been involved in independent theater projects, which have significantly influenced his artistic practice. The dynamics of performance have shaped his paintings, making process and movement central to his work. Each piece carries a sense of immediacy, where there is always an interplay between figure and background, and a constant presence of process. Sedov’s paintings explore themes of identity and memory, with a particular focus on the psychological aspects of human experience. His craft-based approach strives to balance conceptual depth with the physicality of painting, allowing for both improvisation and careful deliberation in his practice.

Artist Statement

Through my work, I explore the relationship between the self and external realities, using painting as a means to engage with subconscious processes. My practice is centered on the tension between individual experience and collective memory, seeking to address the emotional and psychological dimensions of these themes. I am particularly interested in how the act of painting itself—through layers of paint—can reflect time, effort, and the internal dynamics we experience. The influence of performance art is present in my work, where the dynamic between figure and background, as well as the process itself, plays a key role. Each brushstroke is a part of a larger, evolving conversation, where both planned and spontaneous moments contribute to the work’s form. For me, the process of making is as significant as the final piece, with each layer contributing to a narrative that speaks of human experience and transformation.

https://sedov.fr

I am a Polish-Swedish artist based in Stockholm with an interdisciplinary practice in which photography, text, and other visual expressions interact. I work with photography, painting, drawing, performance, and video, allowing the medium that best responds to the current investigation to guide the process.

Photographic observations often serve as a point of departure and are further developed through drawing and painting, while performance and text function as reflective and immersive spaces for storytelling. My practice is rooted in autobiography and documentary approaches, revolving around questions of memory, identity, and embodied experience.

In recent years, text has become an integrated and parallel tool in my artistic practice, both as a method and as a primary form. This has led to an in-depth engagement with an autobiographical prose book, in which I explore how visual perception can be translated into literary language.

In this project, I investigate how memories, documentary material, and personal experiences can be woven together into a cohesive prose text. The book will also include newly created drawings as an integrated part of the artistic expression, where text and image interact and shift one another’s meanings.

By starting from the autobiographical, I aim to open up broader questions concerning time, the body, and memory. My practice is characterized by a long-term investigation into how personal experiences can be processed and articulated through different forms of storytelling, which in this project is further developed within a literary format.

Webpage: http://gabriellanovak.com

”Water”, Polaroids, 2014

I immerse my face in water as an act of quiet surrender. For a fleeting moment, the body dissolves beneath the surface, suspended between breath and silence, visibility and disappearance.

Water becomes a space of ritual—a gesture of purification and renewal. Submersion marks a threshold, a passage through which the body sheds its weight, memory, and the traces of lived experience. To emerge is not simply to return, but to return altered.

The Polaroid holds this fragile moment of transition. Its singular, material presence mirrors the irreversibility of the gesture itself: an instant that cannot be repeated, only witnessed. The image does not document an action as much as it preserves a state of becoming—a body suspended between dissolution and reappearance, between vulnerability and transformation.

”Braid”, Installation; drawing (1985), photography, hair, 2015

When I was child, my hair grew for years, too long, reaching my waist, becoming a weight I carried without choice. My mother brushed it carefully, adding pink ribbons, beads, and clips, as if they completed an image I did not recognize as my own. When I was around seven years old, alone at home, I found my mother’s scissors hidden in the highest cupboard and climbed to reach them. Standing in front of the mirror, I cut my hair off without a plan, watching it fall to the floor and take with it the shape I had been forced to carry. It looked uneven and strange, but for the first time, the decision belonged entirely to me.

She exhibits regularly in Sweden and internationally and has carried out several public art commissions. Eva’s works express a universal human theme. They often highlight questions of conformity and norms versus freedom and courage. Through body language and gestures, the objects come to life. A space for reflection opens up, where the viewer’s thoughts and memories can be activated.

The work borrows its title from the two words stamped onto the streets of Berlin by the German resistance fighter Charlotte Bischoff in Peter Weiss’s novel The Aesthetics of Resistance. It refers to a desperate act intended to make someone stop and awaken from their sleep, to defend themselves against madness and to resist. Värj Er is a performative gesture, a bodily act carried out by a precarious body in order to reclaim a space, even if only for a moment before it is erased. To borrow Judith Butler’s words, actions such as this mobilize the space itself, calling upon the sidewalks and animating and organizing the architecture. How do we defend ourselves against the fascism, exploitation, and extractive forces of our present time? Värj Er is the echo of a future past.

Seize the Means of Recreation 2025, letterpress print on 300 g Munken paper

The work paraphrases the Marxist slogan concerning the necessity for the working class to reclaim the means of production. However, through merely reclaiming the material resources for the production of goods, we create only the conditions for a half-lived life tied to labour. To create a whole and livable life beyond precarity, it is also necessary to reclaim the infrastructures of everyday life: the spaces for recreation, recovery, culture, and education. The work asks how we create emancipatory spaces and what a collective organization around the means and production of leisure could look like in order to create an outside to today’s neoliberal social order. Storm a spa facility, occupy your nearest padel court!

The work was printed together with Helén Edling and Annika Thörn Legzdins at Grafikverkstan Godsmagasinet in Uttersberg. It has previously been shown in the exhibition Tusen Kulturhus at Konstfrämjandet Västmanland in Norberg.
