Nordic Analog Network
The Nordic Analog Network connects photography darkrooms across the Nordic countries through a shared program of artist residencies.
The Nordic Analog Network program began in 2022 with a pilot collaboration between the the darkrooms in Helsinki and Oslo. Between 2023 and 2024, 23 artists participated, each traveling for two to four weeks to work in a darkroom in another Nordic country.
The residency program will continue in 2026–2027, with a focus on sustainable analog photography.
The Network is coordinated by CYAN Studio in Oslo, Norway, and the Finnish Darkroom Association in Helsinki, Finland, and supported by Nordic Culture Point.

A Place for Focus, Exchange, and Analog Magic
We offer two darkrooms designed to support deep concentration while also encouraging the sharing of knowledge and experiences with fellow resident artists. The darkrooms can be rented independently or included as part of an artist‑in‑residence program.
Björkö Darkrooms also hosts courses ranging from introductory to master level, covering photography and darkroom techniques.
The setup is simple but thoughtfully arranged. Here, you can create magic—much like photographers Aaron Siskind or Lisette Model, whose workflows often unfolded in modest yet well‑organized environments. Our library gives you the opportunity to explore the working methods of such photographers in depth.
A Setting for Developing Your Analog Practice
Our facilities and location are ideal for artists who want to refine their craft and explore the full potential of analog processes. This is not a place for speed or bulk production; instead, it offers an atmosphere that supports attentive, focused, and deliberate work.
You become part of an international residency environment with at least one other darkroom practitioner, creating opportunities for exchange and learning.
We welcome both experimental and traditional approaches—from early photographic techniques to contemporary fine art methods, including ecological processes such as soil‑ and plant‑based developers or caffenol.
Introduction, Community, and Public Sharing
Upon arrival, you will receive a short induction session covering ecological guidelines and safety procedures.
At the beginning of your stay, we host a “meet and greet”—an in‑house artist presentation followed by dinner with the other residents. Toward the end of the residency, you will take part in a “show and tell,” sharing your work either in person or online.
We are also happy to produce a short video about your darkroom practice and to promote your work through our social media channels and selected newsletters.
Studio and Shared Spaces
An additional week can be added if you wish to use the studio as an exhibition space.
The studio is 76 m² and located on the same floor as the darkroom. The kitchen is shared with other artists, and our “light room” can be used for collaborative activities.
We also provide a small 4K camera kit (video, light, and sound) for self‑documentation.
